Hey there,
has anyone been to Barbados? I'm going there solo in two weeks and would love suggestions on what to do. I was thinking horseback riding on the beach and a trip to the caves. But other than that, I'm lost. All I can think of lay on the beach and drink rum punch.
Any other suggestions?

go tour Mt Gay or Cockspur distilleries if they are open for tours

go the Boatyard if Krosfyah or Xplojun or a local band is playing and get some bajan soca flavour

      Cool, thanks for the suggestions.
What is bajan soca flavour? Is that a music style? Sorry, I'm a little daft.

soca is a musical form that is an offspring of calypso- it is the primary musical form in the english speaking caribbean other than jamaica & belize and a few small places in the north. the leading bajan exponents are Square One and Krosfyah, although Square One's lead singer Alison Hinds has semi-retired. Rupee is also from Barbados, and although he has been classified as a reggae or reggaeton artist, this is very wrong, he is a soca artists, and most of what he sings is soca, albeit in a more modern and urbanised form ("Tempted To Touch").

bajan means barbadian in the vernacular (also, barbados is "bim" or "bimshire" or various other variations)

be warned bajans talk like they're chewing on marl (i tell my bajan friends this all the time, and then they cuss jamaicans...). plus deh could cuss stink, but you probably won't understand it.

the boatyard is well known bar/club/venue

of course you could always just lime in a fancy resort, but if you are going to do that you could have saved some money and gone to the Bahamas, so go see some local culture.

It's been years since I wanted to go on a proper Caribbean vacation, with tiki bars and little colorful umbrellas sticking out of my cocktails! ;-)
How does it feel going on your own? I love travelling, but never did alone, never liked the idea. Actually, I am looking for a travel companion to either the US Western Coast or the Carribeans. But I guess I'll have to resolve going solo.

Who knows, maybe if you had gone there later this summer, we could have gone together!

Thanks guys. My trip is in a week and I can't wait. Sorry Peitro, I'm going solo this trip. It would have been fun to have a companion but I think, I think I need some time away from LA. Watch, I'll be in a hotel with all Los Angeleans.
I travel around the US on my own a lot. I wonder how it wil be without a computer. But I do have one at the hotel... so I won't be too far removed from everyone.

Anyhow, I'm looking forward to it. i'll let you know.

Well, you are going to feel at home, with all LA people in the same hotel!

I am very interested in your comments about this trip, because Barbados is in my wish list.

Can I ask you where you like to travel in the US? I definitely will go to the States again (been there 2 years ago, extensive tour all around the country), because there is so much to see in every single season of the year! I was in LA: I drove from Las Vegas to Los Angeles and spent a day at the Universal Studios and the Santa Monica pier. Of course I missed so many other things!

        Keep me posted!

I need some advice from people who have been or are still living there but not on a tourist level, more like facing the day to day living, as i said, especially with very little fund and 2 children, i am going there for good in 3 mths.
    Please anyone?!
