Anyone know of a work trade or alternative/cheap places to stay in Puerto Rico??

Hola!!! Greetings!!....
I am moving to Puerto Rico on December 10th...I'll be there for about 5 months and would like to spend as little as possible on a place to stay.....and we could stay in different places
How is the camping situation there?.....Ill probably camp often if its possible and safe....to save money...
I'm a Massage Therapist and my boyfriend is a Boat Captain and Dive Master......He'll be working out of San Juan...for Aqua Adventures......We need to get a vehicle (car or moped) and find a place to stay upon arriving...Do you have a car for sale or know of anyone who does??
Thanks for your time and please let us know if you have any suggestions on alternative and cheap places to stay!
Muchas Gracias!!!
Lacie

Hi

I am a local author in San Francisco spreading word about my new book about my life working on a cruise ship. Permanent Passenger: My Life on a Cruise Ship chronicles my wacky job search to get my dream job as Assistant Cruise Director and takes you behind the scenes on a cruise ship.

Witnessing rescues at sea, stowaways, fatalities, and passionate romances are just some of the day to day events revealed in this intriguing and humorous account.

Go to www.permanentpassenger.com to see more about the book.

Truly a very funny insightful book that will make you laugh – cry – and throw up just a bit.

Cheers

in exchange for some help. I have a small, fun B&B in Puerto Rico and I am looking for someone to cook breakfast, make beds and do laundry for about a month starting Jan. 30. My business partner needs to return to California to take care of a sick relative and I need to keep the business open. If you are a couple or individual who would like some warm weather, own room, swimming pool, great atmosphere with ocean view of the Caribbean in a small fishing village -- please respond. OH, there is a small black lab puppy named "Marley" (yes, after Bob) who also lives here. Please email so we can talk more if you are interested.

Gracias, Boricua

ps take a look - www.casalibrepr.com - serious folk only please!

Hey there,
has anyone been to Barbados? I'm going there solo in two weeks and would love suggestions on what to do. I was thinking horseback riding on the beach and a trip to the caves. But other than that, I'm lost. All I can think of lay on the beach and drink rum punch.
Any other suggestions?

We are starting up a brand new sailing race as a part of the maritime preservation movement that is in the Caribbean but is not united. The purpose is to unite all of us who document the skills inherent to sailing these seas for commercial means, including whaling, turtling, fishing, conching, crayfishing, cargo transport, passenger transport, wrecking, piracy... and anything else that moved under sail in the Caribbean Basin, including Bermuda.
If you are interested in becoming a part of this movement or just interested, write me at this address or at herossea2004@yahoo.com.
At this point in time we are inviting the Bahamas to race our Caicos Sloops and Cayman has also shown an energetic interest in bringing some Cayman Catboats here for our newly formed Mariners' Week from 6 June-12 June, 2007.

Your favorite Caribbean spot?

What's your favorite Caribbean vacation spot? Why? What are the pros and the cons of that place?

For me it's Turks and Caicos (Providenciales, specifically). The beaches are that beautiful soft white sand. The water is crystal clear (well, not always in hurricane season, but where is it clear during that time?) The weather is great (when it rains it's USUALLY for short bursts) The people who live there are nice. The scuba diving is AMAZING.

The con ... there's not much to do other than water sports if you are not at one of the all-inclusive resorts.

When I go, I usually stay at Club Med, because I enjoy being at an all-inclusive resort, and also having lots of activities at my disposal if I choose to take part in them. But I try to go outside the club for dinner at least one night.

Well, it looks like Tropical Storm (or soon to be Hurricane) Chris will be hitting the Caribbean over the next few days. It's heading straight for Turks and Caicos, which is VERY upsetting to me!! I have so many friends down there, and it is my favorite spot to go on vacation.

I just pray that everyone is ok and that there will be no damage (or at least minimal damage!)

I was wondering if there are any places in the Caribean one could recommend going to with kids, 4 of them between the ages of 5 and 14. I am very weary of daycares and camp places. So just stuff that we can go to and do as a family. Basically we are all just into beachbumming, so which places, hotels, condos are childfriendly. A hut on the beach, no worries, no cares style sort of vacation. No shoes no shirt no problems.

Jamaica Over the New Year

It looks like my group will have to reschedule our October trip for the end of the year. It's hard to get six working / learning adults 10 days off in the middle of October apparently. I've only been to jah during the rainy down season in the fall.

It looks like our best bet will be to go over the new year from 12/27-1/04/07 or so. This has got to be at some tourist peak for the island, correct? I'm curious how people's experience has been on the island during more touristy time periods, and if you have any suggestions about hanging about in Jamaica this time of year.

thanks,

Hello all,

I just joined this tribe - going to Grenada on March 14th 2006 to spend two weeks on the island and would appreciate any ideas or comments on what to see, where to go and what not to miss (or the opposite for that matter!). If any locals would like to meet for a beer and fill me in on what's going on in Grenada, gimme a shout, too!

Regards,
DVD TO RAISE FUNDS FOR GRENADA HURRICANE RELIEF

Hi

I've just released a new documentary fiolm about Grenada. Here is more info.

GRENADA: THE MAROON SPIRIT, a new documentary film by Pumpkinhead Production Company to donate portion of sales to Grenada Maroon Fund

What happens when a small Caribbean island is hit by a massive hurricane? How does a country cope when 90% of their homes are destroyed or damaged? What happens when your agricultural sector is wrecked and your major export crop will take years to recover? What are the hopes of the people for the future under such conditions? These are some of the questions that GRENADA: THE MAROON SPIRIT hopes to answer for people. This new production by the Pumpkinhead Production Company was filmed on the island of Grenada in the Eastern Caribbean in November of 2004, two months after Hurricane Ivan devastated the island nation on September 7.

Traveling throughout Grenada and its sister island of Carriacou, GRENADA: THE MAROON SPIRIT interviews people from all walks of life, hearing about their experiences with the deadly hurricane and their efforts to rebuild their lives. They tell of the deadly winds, the flying debris and the resulting destruction. Their stories of working together with their neighbours, as a community to quickly get back on their feet are inspiring and educational. They credit Hurricane Ivan with rekindling the “Maroon Spirit” amongst the population. The actual live footage of Hurricane Ivan shows the deadly force that these brave people had to face.

The film places Hurricane Ivan within a historical context by interviewing two of Grenada’s foremost historians, author and historian George Brizan and Beverly Steele, author and Head Tutor at T.A. Marryshow House, Grenada campus of the University of the West Indies about Grenada’s past. This is a past that includes mass suicides, civil wars, dictatorships, revolutions, and invasions. Brenda Hood, Minister of Tourism, tells of the hurricane’s affect on the government and its efforts to rebuild their country.

GRENADA: THE MAROON SPIRIT is a fifty-minute documentary film. It is the first feature length film by the Pumpkinhead Production Company, an independent film production house located in New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada. The DVD is being sold online at www.grenadamaroonspirit.com or by mailing Pumpkinhead Production Company, P.O. Box 283, 720 6th Street, New Westminster, BC V3L 3C5. Pumpkinhead is committed to donating a portion of every sale to the Maroon Spirit Fund to aid in Grenada’s recovery.

How does it differ from the Northern islands...let's say Turks and Caicos, Jamaica, D.R., and even Cancun...?? If anyone has been...What did you think of the Martinique in general?

Renting a Private Guest House in Negril, Jamaica

Hello,

I went to Negril for the first time in Oct. of 04. Now I'm planning a trip for three couples to negril.

I have a few questions I was hoping someone could help out with:

I want to find a three bedroom house I can rent for a week that is out over the ocean or right on the beach. Can you suggest a local contact or some non-spammed out travel site on the web?

Also, it would be great to have someone come in and cook meals most days. Of course we want a local to do this. Has anyone ever made arrangements like this before? I'd love suggestions here.

Also, we'll probably fly into Montego Bay. I'd like to get a driver on retainer at a flat rate for the whole week. Someone who just hangs out near the house if we want to go somewhere but has no duties otherwise. Any suggestions on finding someone like this?

I'd love any ideas people have who have done planning for groups. Thanks.

Yacht Work
125 foot yacht w/ excellent crew accomodations needs year-round stewardess or steward/massage therapist. Or you could also work as deck hand but the massage ability is important. Yacht is between Boston and Sag Harbor summers to late fall, then Florida and Caribbean and in Mediterranean late spring. It is privately owned by one man and will be used by him 80 to 90% of year and chartered only once a year for 6 weeks. This is a full-time, long term position. 4k per mo. Boat has crew of 5 to 7.

I am looking for a beach front property to live, on an island in the south pacific. Maybe Fiji or Tahiti? I'd like to build some huts over the ocean and run a small secluded island retreat for travelers. Any one have any experience or advice?

Travel friend needed

- When to travel: jul 2005 - sep 2005
- Who am I: Hi. I am a 31-year-old Italian living in the UK. I love travelling, but sharing with someone else adds something special to it. My friends haven't got enough money for my idea of travels, so I thought to try to find someone else here.
- My travelplans: This summer I would love to visit the US. I am keen on the Western Coast, but I am open to every possibility (especially Caribbean style vacation). I think it is great choosing together our itinerary. While travelling, I love dining in typical restaurants with relaxing, romantic atmosphere, I enjoy the beach, especially late afternoon/sunset, I like historic places, I adore nature and its breathtaking landscapes, I try to catch the spirit of big cities like NYC or London. I prefer decent hotels ($60/90 per night) but I am willing to cut on expenses or spend more than that. Renting a car and driving together would be great in the US.
- Whom am I looking for: You are a nice woman, around my age (+/- 5/6 years). You have an adventurous side and don't get scared if we need to improvise. You like to divert from the original plan if you feel like that. You like both to inspire and get inspired. You love to laugh and to sing together on top of our lungs while driving around the country! :-)
You like more or less the things I like (see above). Drop me a line, I am waiting for you.

Want to go to the caribbean in Oct...I've never been there, and need advice where to stay. I would like as non commercial(away from Disney), but a nice night life town as possible...perferably (can't spell) a bungalow type housing on the beach. Can anyone suggest an Island?

Thanks...

In return, I recomend Cambodia. It is a safe and wonderful country. Beautiful white sand beaches, and cheap lodging. The people there are WONDERFUL!!

This coming September I'm going to be laid off from my current job and will have 5 months of severance. I'm thinking of parking my ass on an island somewhere for a month to do nothing but hang out and dive (I'm an assistant instructor now but will be a full instructor by then). I need a place where I can live cheaply, slack and dive cheaply. Some place with turquoise water, white beaches, cold drinks and beautiful women. Any suggestions?

This is the best way to see the caribbean islands. They take you to the little lesser known and known islands, depending on their itinerary and you get a feel of the isalnds up close and personal. It's not a BIG oceanliner cruise it's a sailship and I think they have 3 0r 4 in their fleet now and each ship has their own itinerary of a selection of isalnds. It's well worth it!

Favorite Carribean getaways?

What's your favorite Carribean getaway? I have a couple:

1) Culebra island. This small island off the eastern coast of Puerto Rico is largely undeveloped and has the most incredible beaches you have ever seen. Flamenco Playa in particular is breathtaking. If you go, I suggest camping at the grounds for a few days (right next to the water), or getting a room in one of the small hotels in the main town. Culebra is a cheap getaway -- it costs only $5 to take a ferry over from Fajardo, which is about an hour from San Juan.

2) Bitter End Yacht Club.
More expensive and exclusive, but just as relaxing as Culebra. You can rent a Cabana, or charter a sailboat, for 1-2 weeks at a time. The Bitter End has a fleet of sailboats (from Hobies to 28-footers) that every guest can use on demand. There's also an excellent scuba diving shop (Kilbrides) with experienced and knowledgable staff.

Grenada Corruption

Someone posted me this blurb, I thought I should repost it.

The Grenadian Prime Minister, Keith Mitchell has imprisoned 4 people and sued several others claiming "Libel", over the possibility of them redistributing a news article exposing a scandal to the tune of half a million dollars written by David Marchant of OffShoreAlert/
Luckily, The Jamaica Observer has disregarded legal threats and http://www.jamaicaobserver.com/news/html/20040605T000000-0500_60778_OBS_GRENADA_S_PM_FILES_LAWSUITS_AGAINST_CABLE___WIRELESS.asp, published an article outlining the scandal as well as the oppression of free speech..
PM Mitchell has sued http://www.candw.gd into shutting down the Grenadian community forums, but someone outside of Grenada has setup a replacement at http://grenada.undef.net

Hey folks. I'm going to be moving to Greneda mid December 2003. I would love to hook up with any expats down in the islands, or even anyone at all. I'll primarily be in St. Georges, but also heading over to Trinidad and Tobago on occasion. If you know of anyone down there, please tell them to drop me a note.

I don't know how many of you know StMartin, but I was there last week. We stayed at the Alamanda on Orient Beach, a wonderful beach, especially at this time of the year. However, we also dicovered Cupecoy Beach, on the Dutch side of StMartin, a secluded beach on the west side of the island. The sunset picture shown in my album was taken from there on Sunday night...I would recommend to anybody to watch the sun set from the Cliffhanger, a little wooden restaurant set on the cliff at Cupecoy beach.

I'm new here and madly in love with the Caribbean. I've been trying a new island every year and there are many I'd gladly revisit. I'm not sure I can say I have a favorite, I like them all (and there's still plenty I haven't seen) and love to see what makes one different from another. Among the ones I've been to are Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, St. Martin, Jamaica, Aruba, Barbados, Virgin Gorda, Turks and Caicos. Virgin Gorda we only saw getting off a cruise ship, but we've gone back to stay at islands that we liked when we visited on ships.

I wanted to go to the Four Seasons in Nevis this year for my anniversary, but as luck would have it, Greg can't get away from his job then and the difference in price for their high season made me think twice about it. Another year maybe. But I've heard Nevis is beautiful. Settled on Cap Juluca in Anguilla....the island itself isn't as pretty, but it's got an interesting history, and I always like to hear all about it before I go. (the time there goes so fast....I like to stretch out the anticipation and get maximum enjoyment out of it) If you're interested in checking it out, we're staying here

www.capjuluca.com

One of the things I would have loved to see is, unfortunately, closed to the public right now, although they're going to make it a tourist attraction. Fountain Cavern as it's called is supposed to be a natural and cultural wonder. An old steel ladder takes you down fifty feet into a cave which contains two fresh water pools and at least a dozen Amerindian petroglyphys or rock carvings, the most significant of which is a sixteen foot stalagmite which has been carved in the shape of “Jocahu ”, the supreme God of the Taino Indians (sometimes referred to as the Arawaks, these were the people Columbus “encountered ”on his first voyage to the Caribbean). Jocahu was also known as the "Creator Giver of Cassava" and this particular carving is supposed to be 2000 years old. The Arawaks called the island “Malliou-hana ”(the current name of a nice hotel there) which apparently means "arrow-shape sea serpent" and they built ceremonial sites to their gods, based on the sun and moon and two sacred caverns, where they believed all of mankind originated. Anguilla is supposed to be one of the richest prehistoric sites in the region and studies are ongoing by archaeologists.

The island isn't as tropical looking as some, but it's covered with beautiful beaches and there's lots of good snorkeling. We booked a package that includes a daytrip to Prickly Pear for snorkeling, and has some other nice inclusions like champagneand a flowers, breakfast on your own terrace overlooking the ocean every morning, and a couples massage from their spa. I understand from surfing around that Malliouhana and Cuisinart are also great hotels.

Anybody else ever been to Anguilla? Any suggestions if you have?

Tina
